LABUAN: The Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce commended the Sarawak Government’s bold move to purchase MASWings and make it the first Malaysian state to own a full-fledged airline.
“This is not a small step but a leap,” said its Chairman Datuk Wong Kii Hii.
“The new name for the airline which is AirBorneo is also a right choice for it reflects that though the airline is now under Sarawak control it would concentrate equally on both the Malaysian Borneo states of Sarawak and Sabah as well as Labuan,” he added.
MASWings was a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysian Aviation Group (MAG) dedicated to providing essential air connectivity to remote areas in Sabah under the Rural Air Services (RAS) programme and had been useful over the years facilitating access to healthcare, education and economic opportunities.
