Kota Kinabalu: Koperasi Pekerja-Pekerja Kerajaan Sabah Berhad (Kopeks) is currently undertaking a condominium development project in collaboration with a local Bumiputera housing company on its land in Manggatal, near here.
Kopeks Chairman Datuk Dr Saat Ag Damit said the project is expected to be completed within three to four years.
“This project involves the development of three condominium blocks comprising 640 residential units, with priority given to Kopeks members to purchase at a special price,” he said at the Kopeks Iftar (breaking of fast) event at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Thursday.
He added that Kopeks is providing the land without needing to invest significant capital.
“Through this partnership, we expect to generate profits of up to RM30 million upon the project’s completion.”
Apart from housing development, Kopeks is also expanding its business scope, including venturing into the healthcare sector by taking over the management of a health clinic.
“One of Kopeks’ latest initiatives is the Umrah programme, which enables members to perform the pilgrimage through a loan package of up to RM15,000, with a service charge rate of 2.99 per cent.
“We want to provide Kopeks members with the opportunity to perform Umrah without having to wait until they have sufficient funds. They can apply for a loan and repay it in instalments over five to seven years,” said Dr Saat.
So far, 13 individuals have joined the first group under this programme, with more expected to participate.
In addition, Kopeks is planning to develop a boutique hotel in its building in Sembulan. The building will be renovated into a boutique hotel through a partnership with an experienced cooperative in the hospitality sector.
Meanwhile, Kopeks has been appointed by Koperasi Kakitangan Petronas Berhad (Kopetro) as the official distributor of its vehicle engine oil in Sabah and Labuan.
“We see great potential in this business and will strive to gain support from the State Government to strengthen the marketing of this product,” said Dr Saat.
The iftar event is an annual tradition for Kopeks, not only to share a meal but also as a platform to support the underprivileged.
“This event is not just about breaking fast, but also includes contributions to asnaf groups and orphans. Every year, we not only break fast with the community but also provide donations to those in need. This is what makes Kopeks’ iftar unique,” he said.
He said the iftar event also serves as the concluding ceremony for the Kopeks Ramadan programme, which was previously held in Ranau.
“Since last year, we have travelled to various districts to personally deliver aid to those in need. This has given us the opportunity to witness first-hand the reality of life for the less fortunate, including those living in poverty and hardship.”
