Kota Kinabalu: University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) researchers have developed a method of detecting very low concentration of melamine in milk products with 99 per cent accuracy.UMS Biotechnology Research Institute senior lecturer (Biochemistry Lab), Dr Shafiquzzaman Siddiquee, said the research was conducted using electrochemical sensor technology. The technology is capable of yielding results within 30 seconds when compared to the conventional method, which requires one whole day.

"Melamine is one kind of Triazine analogue together with three amino groups. It will be hydrolysed into Cyanuric Acid, Ammeline and Ammelide under strong acid or alkaline condition. "It is commonly used in the production of melamine-formaldehyde resins to synthesise plastics, coatings and so on, but lately it has been illegally added into dairy products by unethical companies," he said in a statement Tuesday.Shafiquzzaman, who is also a member of the UMS Biosensor research group, said efforts had also been made to develop the biological method of detection in combination with physical transducers and bionsensors.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

"In contrast, determination of melamine in milk products based on the development of electrochemical biosensors can offer several advantages such as simple operation procedure, faster analysis, time saving, high sensitivity and selectivity, real time detection and a low detection limit," he said.
