Forty five to vie for Sugandoi top spot

Penampang: Forty five hopefuls will be battling it out to vie for the top spot in the State Level Sugandoi Kaamatan competition. The contestants came from all districts and areas throughout the State, including Klang Valley and Johor Bahru.

State Level Sugandoi Kaamatan Chairman Evaristus Gungkit said contestants came as early as 8am for registration.

"Registration went smoothly and from what I see during the practise sessions with the live band, all of the contestants had shown good potential to grab the winner's title.

"This is my third year chairing the organising committee and I am pleased to see that some of the changes and upgrades that we did are showing positive results," he said after a briefing with the contestants at Hongkod Koisaan, here, on Monday.

In the quarter finals and semi finals, contestants are given the freedom to sing any Kadazandusun Murut song. Contestants are also allowed to sing their own self-composed songs.

Only 20 quarter finalists will make it to the next level and ten contestants will be selected for the finals. During the finals, contestants are required to sing two Kadazandusun Murut songs.

The contestants are Isabell representing Tuaran, Aznor Jipin (Tamparuli), Mohd Rifanzie Ruji (Labuan), Christopher Simon (Tenom), Hennie Fionnie Henry Anjun (Kemabong), Walter George (Beaufort), Mark Royston Sylvester (Papar), Ray Asmadin (Libaran), Jellycia Lukas (Lahad Datu), Daryl Wesmin (Klang Valley), Charlyn Minjoe (Kuala Penyu), McKenna Godie (Kota Belud).

The champion will walk away with RM6,000, a trophy and a certificate while the first and second runner-up will receive RM4,000 and RM3,000, respectively.

Other finalists will go home with RM600 each and the Popular Singer award winner will receive RM1,000.

The quarter finals will be held tonight (Tuesday) and the semi finals is tomorrow night.

The finals will be staged on Saturday. All events start at 7pm, at Hongkod Koisaan KDCA, here.
