Kota Kinabalu: Residents of Taman Lido, especially those in the Lorong Rampai area, who risk flash floods whenever it rains heavily have raised the matter with the Sabah People's Right Association after enduring the problem for 13 years now.Association President Lee Pun Yee said residents from the Lido housing area approached him after their repeated requests to the authorities to do something about the flooding did not see any action being taken on the matter.

"The residents told me that as a result of the flooding their furniture and home fixtures have been damaged and in some cases they were forced to buy new furniture. As such the residents hoped the relevant authorities can do something to solve the flooding problem which they have been experiencing since 2003."

Lee said this to the media during a site visit to the area on Wednesday together with City Hall Engineering Department personnel Alexcius Likid and members of the media to understand the reasons for the flash flood problem.

Lee called on Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai to look into the problems faced by the Lido residents.

"As the new Mayor, it is hoped he can do something to settle the flooding problems faced by the residents since 2003."

"I only came to know that the drainage matters in this area is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID) thus in the near future it is also my aim to organise a meeting with City Hall and the DID to discuss a solution to this issue."

Meanwhile Lee also expressed his disappointment that the assemblyman for the Taman Lido area did not turn up to join the visit even though invitations were extended to him.

Lee said he understood the State Legislative Assembly was still in session but said at the very least the Assemblyman could have sent a representative if he was unable to attend to record his constituents' concerns.

Meanwhile Alexcius said that the presence of a dead end monsoon drain nearby some shops in the area also contributed to the flooding problem in the Lorong Rampai area.

"Often this dead end monsoon drain would be full during high tide, that is why the drains at the Lorong Rampai area are slow to drain during heavy rains resulting in flash flooding as the water has no way to go quickly.

"Since the monsoon drain is under the jurisdiction of the DID, we need to have a discussion with them on how best to address the problem," Alexcius said, adding that he will also put areas of the drains in the Lorong Rampai area that need repairs in City Hall's maintenance schedule.
