Kota Kinabalu: Doctor's Day celebration was held moderately for the first time in Sabah at Permai Polyclinic, Jalan Pantai premises at the state capital last Monday. President of The Association of Private Practitioners Sabah (APPS), Dr. James Jeremiah said among the aims was to promote mutual ties among APPS members as well as to continue providing professional services to public.

Among activities carried out were general medical check-ups, eye screening test. 25 members of the public had their eye-sight checked while 37 numbers went for medical screening. Blood donation drive was also held at the 1st floor of the premise. "There could have been more if this was carried out during the weekend, but we wanted to coincide with 10th October which fell on Monday to commemorate our Doctor's Day.

On our part, we have achieved our objectives by providing free medical check-ups to public.

This event was announced in the papers a few days earlier to allow public to be aware. e are happy that some of our members turned up and support the programme which is our day to contribute back to the society," explained Dr. Rizin Kusop, the secretary of APPS.

He added that healthcare is utmost important that no one should ignore. "We must be always cautious of our own healthcare. Live a good life by eating healthily so that we can continue enjoying life without being burdened with illnesses," said Rizin.

Meanwhile Dr. Ravi Balan, who did the medical consultation in the morning during the event shared that eating moderately would give better health and well-being. He advised public to be alert in consuming too much carbohydrate as it may not be good specially those who are in their 40s.

"Just avoid eating too much of carb such as rice, bread. If you need to eat, take a small portion.

Our body need not have to get too much of carb if we don't use energy for our work.

For example, a person who sits in the office may not use so much of energy (physically), therefore, eating a small portion is sufficient enough.

Avoid eating anything heavy at night. Salad and light soup is just nice," he added.

He also advised those who are on diet to have regular meal and just avoid intake of excessive carbohydrate.

Dr. Premadeva Satkurunathan, a consultant ophthalmologist of Gleneagles Hospital who did the eye-screening services said that an early detection of eyesight issues would give better treatment rather than when the matter has become more serious.

"As for children with eye problem, early detection of potential vision problem is important, so that it can be corrected while in early stage.

While for the adults, if you have risk factor for eye diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, or family history of eye diseases like glaucoma, you must have regular eye check ups.

Consult your doctor what is the ideal interval between check-ups for your eyes and make an appointment with an eye doctor before it's too late," advised Premadeva. The celebration continued in the evening with simple dinner among the members and cake cutting ceremony to commemorate their Doctor's Day.

A talk on Respiratory Drug was also carried out to share its usage and benefit for the doctors who were present during the night.
