Labuan: The newly-set up special task force to oversee the various issues in Labuan has yet to conclude any recommendation to the Cabinet on the soon-to-be-implemented new customs ruling and policy in the duty-free island here. One of the task force members, who is also Labuan's former MP Datuk Suhaili Abd Rahman, said the ruling, scheduled to be implemented on Nov, 1 must be extended, pending Cabinet decision.

"We have not come to a conclusion on our discussion for recommendations to the Cabinet as the task force sub-committee is still preparing papers on the issue," he said.

The task force, whose members comprise Labuan's current and former MPs, relevant heads of government and Labuan Umno divisional heads, was set up by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zahid Hamidi last April.

The new ruling, among others, requires bank guarantee of 50 per cent of the CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) valuation for Labuan-registered vehicles with engine capacity of 2,501cc and above.

Labuan-registered vehicles with engine capacity of below 2,500cc will only be required to pay general bond as is the current practice.

The implementation of the new ruling is aimed at addressing the unlawful act of certain vehicle owners who fail to return their vehicles to Labuan upon completion of the annual 90-day period.
