Kota Kinabalu: Cyber crime activities in the country are growing as many criminals exploit the speed, convenience and anonymity of the Internet to commit crimes, either physically or virtually.Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Network Security and Enforcement Sector Chief Officer, Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin, said the methods used by these criminals are becoming more complex as well.

"In order to address this issue, MCMC has established a state-of-the-art Digital Forensics Laboratory to assist in the investigation and enforcement of relevant laws related to cyber crimes in Malaysia," he said, adding that the Digital Forensics Department received 854 cases since 2013.

Zulkarnain said this in his keynote speech at the launching of the Borneo Cyber Security Challenge 2017, here, Saturday.

He said just enforcing the law to solve information security problems is insufficient.

Thus, MCMC aims to raise awareness towards enhancing the level and quality of education and ethics in information security through various programmes, including Klik Dengan Bijak and collaborations on a series of cyber competitions encompassing digital forensics, ethical hacking and defence, he said.

"Therefore, today's event is part of MCMC's initiative to empower the people, especially youths, with knowledge in the field of IT and communications.

"As per our Transformasi Nasional (TN50) detailed in the 2017 Budget, we aim to develop a new generation of local talent and form a nation state of a high calibre as well as an excellent mindset," he said.

Earlier in his speech, he said the commission has pushed for increased broadband access in both urban and rural areas, whether by increasing the speed of broadband access in urban or densely populated areas, providing broadband access outside the city or establishing the 1Malaysia Internet Centre (PI1M).

"With over 77.9 per cent broadband penetration nationwide, we have come closer towards bridging the digital divide," he said.

The Borneo Cybersecurity Challenge 2017 is a collaboration between MCMC and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and is seen as a way to strengthen, promote and foster cooperation between both parties.

The involvement of MCMC and UMS gives positive impact in creating awareness among the public on the correct Internet ethics and avoid cyber crimes, either consciously or unconsciously. - Tracy Patrick
