Kota Kinabalu: A 30-year-old Filipina single mother was sentenced to 70 years' jail for trafficking seven Filipinas for sex exploitation. However, the sentences will run concurrently.Sessions Court Judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad handed the sentence to Juvy Banting Del Rosario who was found guilty of seven charges against her on Wednesday.

Juvy was jailed 10 years on each count with all the jail terms to be served concurrently from the date of her arrest.

She had trafficked the seven foreigners, aged between 21 and 25, at an entertainment outlet along Jalan Bunga Dahlia, in Labuan, on Oct 22, 2015.

She was convicted of the offence under Section 13 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling Migrants Act 2007 which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine, on conviction.

After serving the jail sentence, Juvy was ordered referred to the Immigration Department.

In mitigation, counsel Korvent E Jomiji, who defended Juvy, asked for a light sentence, saying Juvy is a single mother with four children.

Korvent informed the court that Juvy was the breadwinner for the family, adding that she hoped to be sent back to her hometown as soon as possible.

During the proceedings, Juvy asked for forgiveness for what she had done.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Hafizah Zahidah Abdullah, who stood in for DPP Mohd Khairuddin Idrish, urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence on the grounds that she had committed a serious offence.

Fourteen prosecution and one defence witness testified during the hearing. - Cynthia D Baga
