Labuan: Labuan is set to witness P1 Powerboat Grand Prix racing on its shores, the latest by 2019, as part of its efforts to turn the island into a premier water sports destination.Yayasan Pembangunan Labuan (YPL) and PI Powerboat will introduce the Labuan Grand Prix of the Sea after a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Jan 18, witnessed by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

A new spectator sport, powerboat racing is expected to rev up and exploit the potential of Labuan's huge coastline and once successful, it could lay the blueprint for the sport on the island.

"Our aim is to reinvent the huge potential of Labuan's coastline. Powerboat Grand Prix is a huge spectator sports globally and we wanted to bring the same to the island," said Member of Parliament for Labuan Datuk Rozman Isli.

The colourful racing boats reach speeds as high as 150 mph as spectators on the beach watch them cut across an ever-changing course, challenged by wind and waves.

Rozman said the grand prix would become a signature event on the duty-free-island and potentially become an economic boost.

He said the Mawilla Beach wide frontage is a perfect platform to stage all types of boat races, thus attracting an encouraging many participants.

"The frontage is also a perfect venue to catch a full view of all events from start to finish, hence, it was not surprising to see a huge crowd lining the 200-metre promenade front to watch the exciting races," he said.

He hoped the event can promote Labuan as a preferred venue for water sports. – Bernama
