Takraw set 3-gold target

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Sepak Takraw Association are targeting at least three gold medals at the Sukma Games to be held in Perak in September.Its President Datuk Awang Sham Amit disclosed this after a visit by the new Youth and Sports Minister Frankie Poon during the team training session at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex on Monday.

"This year we are trying to retain the three gold medals that we won at the previous games in Kuching.

I believe with the commitment from all the officials, coaches as well as the overwhelming support from the Youth and Sports Ministry who always gave in to at least ninety percent of our demand, we should at least retain three golds from the women's event which they won in the previous games, and hopefully we can also take the newly introduced quadrant event as well," he said.

He added that the women team have won two of the 'Road to Sukma' circuits to date and the third will be staged in August.

"We are the best team throughout Malaysia at the moment with victories in the opening two legs.

The first leg was between two Sabah teams in the final while the second leg final was against Terengganu."

Also present at the meeting on Monday were Youth and Sports Ministry Permanent Secretary Datuk Awang Damit Ag Anak, Sabah Sports Board Chairman Datuk Louis Rampas and MSN Director Terrance Pudin .

Meanwhile, the women team with 15 athletes will leave for Thailand for a training cum competition stint tomorrow (Wednesday).

There will be based at Nakhon Pathom Sports School for 21 days including taking part in the 40th Prince Cup competition in Fashion Island from June 4-10.

They will then come back for the Hari Raya celebration before returning to the same school on June 20 until the end of July.

The 15 players listed are Nadillatul Rosmahani Saidin, Ellzah Blanda @ Bahari, Siti Zulaiha Zain, Mardiana Sharifuddin, Madziatul Rosmahani Saidin, Elija Thomas, Nur Fateha Rossli, Siti Hadinavillah Jumidil, Roslina Aloysius, Lianah Arip, Juridah Suan, Nur Faizah Mohamad, Kamisah Khamis, Razmah Anam and Nurfaezahni Masri.

Accompanying them are managers Roslie Ibrahim, Malai Effendy Malai Muhamad and coaches Daut Amba, Suthep Chantranusorn with officials Rinah Arip and Dg Siti Anne Nooraini Abu Bakar. - GL Oh
