RM5.2mil Syabu seized, 4 held
Kota Kinabalu: Police have crippled a major drug syndicate following the seizure of 104.3kg of syabu worth RM5.2 million in two separate raids in Tawau.Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department Director Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh said four male suspects from Johor and Kuala Lumpur were arrested in the raids between 12.30pm and 1.45pm on Friday.

The police also seized RM2,000 in Malaysian and Singaporean currencies.

Mohmad said acting on a tip-off a team led by ASP Mohd Ramadzan made the first arrest at Jalan Haji Karim behind Tawau Court.

"A man with a black bag was seen going out of a Perodua Bezza and transferred it to a Perodua Myvi with two people in it.

"The raiding party then ambushed and arrested two of them. The other suspect, who was trying to escape, was also detained," he told reporters here Sunday.

He added that police then arrested another man at a convenience store, believed to be involved in the same syndicate, at Jalan Bunga, off Jalan Masjid, around noon.

"Inspections on the black bag found 20 packets of "Guanyingwang Chinese tea" which were filled with methamphetamine (syabu).

"Police found 20 'Chinese tea' packages without brand, 22 Chinese tea packages in green colour, eight 'Daguanyin Chinese tea', and 22 'Guanyinwang' in the Myvi," he said, adding another 30 'Chinese tea' packets with crystal-like object believed to be syabu were also found inside the Bezza.

Both rented cars used by the suspects were also seized to facilitate investigation into the case.

Mohmad said police were still investigating the modus operandi of the syndicate as they were trying to figure out how the drugs were brought into Sabah.

"We are checking if the drugs were brought in by a passenger or via courier service," he said.

All four suspects have been remanded for further investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty, on conviction.

With this latest drug bust by the Sabah police contingent, a total of 143,430 people had been arrested for drug-related offences since January till Nov 8, this year.

Of the figure, 22,660 arrests involve supply, 54,367 for drug possession and 66,403 for substance abuse.

Out of this, 135,463 are locals and 7,967 foreigners, while 1,102 are detained under the Dangerous Drugs Act.

From January to Nov 8, the State police contingent seized a total of RM340.98 million worth of drugs comprising 3,642.54kg of syabu, 214.52kg of ketamine, 924.12kg of Erimin 5 Pills, 221.76 kg of Yaba pills and 133.17kg of ecstasy pills, including 1,837.21kg of ganja and 647.21kg of heroin. - Sherell Jeffrey
