LDP condemns the child curfew move
Kota Kinabalu: The Liberal Democratic Party said the new Pakatan Harapan Government proposal to impose curfew on teenagers below 18 years should be condemned.

Its Central New Generation Movement Leader, Eric Lau, said such a decision not only violates the human rights of teenagers, but also brings negative elements throughout their childhood.

“Imagine teenagers will get punishment for staying out late with their peers probably for studies group or some sport activities. In this new era, we don’t deserve such an Act to restrict us from doing what we love, as long as we obey to the law,” said Lau.

The PH government considering the curfew to curb drug abuse by teenagers in the country.

“This may not be an effective way to stop them from taking drugs. If they have intention to do so, it can be done anytime, not necessarily at night.

“Children’s education has always been the responsibility of parents or guardians and also teachers. We as adults should give them proper education from young in a way that they can accept rather than forcing them to obey the curfew,” said Lau.

He said such curfew is also unfair to most of the teenagers who are not involved or have no intention to take drugs. During school holidays, these teenagers may want enjoy with their friends in some healthy activities after having their stressful semesters, he said.

“The Government should have more police or relevant authorities to combat some other serious offences, for example drug trade in nightclubs, prostitution, illegal gambling and street racing.

“When some of the irresponsible adults are breaking the law by such wrongful acts, teenagers will eventually be influenced. Besides, the government should look into eliminating the sources of these illegal activities to effectively reduces such crimes,” said Lau.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Wan Azizah said it was among proposals the Government was studying. Two other measures it introduced recently was ordering the closure of all nitespots at 2am and forbidding smoking in eateries.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Khalid said the measure would prompt husbands to spend more time with their families.

Both measures have received mixed proposals with consumers welcoming it but businesses saying it would make an already bleak business environment even worse. Restaurants are already experiencing a drop in business.
