Unesco Club to give students exposure on global issues
CYBERJAYA: The setting up of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) Club and Model United Nations (MUN) in schools so that they can be on par with those of developed countries, says Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik.

Maszlee, who is also Malaysian National Commission for Unesco president, said the move would give students the exposure to global issues such as peace, sustainable development as well as to nurture leadership talent among the younger generation.

Speaking at the launch of the Sekolah Seri Puteri’s Unesco Club and MUN here today, Maszlee also wanted the implementation of both activities to be extended to all secondary schools and tertiary institutions in the country.

Thus far, 20 schools and 22 tertiary institutions nationwide have been involved in the implementation of Unesco Club and MUN, he said.

“The Unesco Club is not just an extra co-curriculum activity, but aspirations behind its establishment should be appreciated by teachers and students, among others, by applying positive values, appreciating the value of peace, diversity and harmony.

“The implementation of MUN will help students to develop skills and increase their credibility at various levels for the future,” he said.

Meanwhile in PUTRAJAYA, Maszlee, when officiating the McDonald’s 2019 Inspirational Teachers Award described it as a special recognition for teachers who went the extra mile due to their dedication and commitment in giving their best to students, beyond classroom learning.

“Teachers are the backbone of the country’s education system and they deserve to be appreciated,” he said.

McDonald’s Malaysia managing director Azmin Jaafar said he expected to receive about 10,000 nominations for this year’s award before 25 teachers be selected to receive the McDonald’s Inspirational Teachers Award, based on their inspirational stories in educating their students.

The nomination is open from today until March 31 at www.mcdonalds.com.my with winners will take home a RM5,000 cash, trophies and certificates of appreciation.

“The selection will be based on several criteria including their efforts to improve students’ achievement, innovative teaching techniques, and actions beyond classroom to help students in certain subjects,” he said.– Bernama
