KOTA KINABALU: To those who do not understand artistic gymnastic, it is just a performance of some routine or ballet on a tight rope. But it is more than that because similar to other sport disciplines, it requires the athletes to undergo specific training regime in order to be good in what they do.

And gymnastic, mind you, is not just some performance of routines as there are disciplines.

It is for this reason that Director of Sabah Sports Council (MSN), Terance Pudin, wants the sport to be enhanced and excelled at the national and international levels.

This sport, for the record, has been contributing medals to the State.

Many Sabahan gymnasts have also been roped into the national squad.

"Gymnastic is actually a fun sport and I hope that more youths or students, especially in Sandakan, will take it up as a career in sports," he said at the Artistic Gymnastic Basic Workshop at Sandakan Sports Complex where 90 students and 10 teachers took part in the one-day event recently.

Hamzahrudin Nordin, he said, is among gymnasts from Sandakan who excelled in the sport and has represented the country at the Commonwealth Games.

"There are also many gymnasts from Sandakan who have represented Sabah at the Malaysian Games (Sukma)," he said.

To this, he expressed hope that similar workshop would be held quite often so as to stir the interest among the students on artistic gymnastic.

It this is achieved, he said, Sabah would not be depleted of such athletes.

"We would then have abundant supply of backup athletes," he said.

He assured that the MSN would continue to provide support as well as guidance to the sport.

The objective of the workshop was to expose and introduce gymnastic to the students, teachers and the parents.

Subsequently, it is hoped that the students' interest would be spurred and thus encouraging them to take up gymnastic.

Pudin said during the duration of the workshop, the participants, particularly the students, were given the opportunity to try out the gymnastic equipment.
