PUTATAN: The Royal Malaysian Navy's effort to assist people in Petagas highlights noble character on their part that should be emulated by others, said Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Yahya Hussin.About 60 of them showed up at the Nur Al Jannah Mosque in Kg Petagas on Tuesday, accompanied by 40 residents from Petagas and Putatan.

"Residents in Petagas and other areas might not even be aware of their existence due to their location in Sepanggar, so be rest assured that they are here with us, in Sabah and are playing their role to assist us where security is concerned," said Yahya, at the closing of the gotong royong which was jointly organised by the Royal Malaysian Navy and the Nur Al Jannah Mosque in Kg Petagas.

He added that through such efforts, good relations could be fostered and strengthened between the security forces and the people.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Ahmad Rahimi Abdul Wahab stationed at Teluk Sepanggar said he and his team members took part in maintenance work, cleaning the drains and other places around the Petagas area.

"We also donated used furniture and other used items to the mosque."

It is an honour for them to help the community, and is proven through their countless contributions to society in the form of volunteer work, gotong royong, donations and so on.

According to Ahmad, this was the first time the Royal Malaysian Navy has taken part in community work in Kampung Petagas for their annual programme.

"We have received excellent response from residents here."
