Call to set up police beat base in Kg Air
KOTA KINABALU: Api-Api Assemblywoman Christina Liew has proposed that a polis pondok (police beat base) be put up at a suitable site at Kg Air, here. Her proposal followed complaints from shopkeepers, taxi drivers, restaurant owners and members of the public calling for improvement of the security level there.

"It is high time for Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) and City Police to seriously consider such a facility. I was informed today by concerned citizens that this is increasingly becoming a crime spot where snatch thefts occur, among other offences.

"In the interest of public safety, I am bringing the people's genuine request to the attention of the local government and law enforcers, more so because Kg Air is within my constituency. As the people's elected representative, It is incumbent upon me to do so," she told reporters.

At her Public Complaints Counter set up at Kg Air on Saturday, a businessman known as Asri and others suggested that the open space in front of Impiana Mutiara Hotel be the site for the proposed police beat base.

Liew, who is Sabah PKR Deputy Chief, said she would be writing to the relevant authorities on the matter in question.

Meanwhile, she also called on DBKK to rectify the deplorable condition of the back alley of shops, saying ratepayers expect good services in return.

"As I went on my rounds, I was shocked to see broken slabs on the pavement, clogged drains, leaking pipes, dead rats and manholes swarming with cockroaches, not to mention the stench, It is so filthy and unhygienic," she lamented.

Affected shopkeepers told her that they had alerted the authorities concerned over the last two years but nothing concrete had been done.

A shopkeeper identified as Wah said every time there was a downpour, the back alley would be flooded due to poor drainage and the wastes from the manholes would spill over into the road.

"The drains are filled with an assortment of trash, including debris from renovation works, which should be discarded in the right place, instead of being dumped into the five footway drains. That is very bad," he pointed out.

Given the Government's focus on city tourism, Liew stressed that the eyesores should be removed and the level of hygiene upgraded if tourism promoters aspire to make Kota Kinabalu a liveable and visitable city, not just for the local population but also for visitors.

"What surprises me is that some roads in other parts of KK have been or are being resurfaced again and again while not much has been done in this respect to streets within the city precincts," she said.
