Late paralympian's family to get help

Selangor: The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) will be giving special financial assistance to the family of national paralympian, Mohammad Azlan Mat Lazim who was killed in a road accident at Serdang Raya, here at noon Sunday. Its minister, Khairy Jamaluddin said he would instruct the National Sports Council (MSN) to provide all assistance deserved by the late sportsman's family, including his funeral arrangement.

"We have death benefits (scheme) to present to his family. The special incentive for 2014 Asian Para Games will also be given to the family.

"I will also make personal donation to the family," he told reporters after paying his last respect to Mohammad Azlan at Serdang Hospital mortuary here, today.

The paralympian bagged three gold medals in the men's 100 metres, men's 200 metres and men's 400 metres in the T38 category at the Asian Para Games in Incheon last year. Mohammad Azlan, 25, was riding a motorcycle with another para athlete, Farisan Jasna, 26, when they we hit by a van in the 1,.45 pm accident.

Mohammad Azlan died at the scene, while Farisan broke her right arm and was being treated at Serdang Hospital.

Meanwhile, Khairy described the sportsman as a paralympic idol after he brought honours to the country at international championships.

"He was recruited in the 2012 MSN Paralympic programme and was also identified as a promising star for the world championships this year and the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio De Janeiro (Brazil). "He was a great athlete and had a bright future. Mohammad Azlan was a cheerful and generous person who was always smiling," said Khairy.

Meanwhile, MSN director-general Ahmad Shapawi Ismail gave his assurance that MSN would arrange all assistance for Mohammad Azlan's family.

"We are sad as he was an icon of paralympic sports and has a lot of success stories to share with other new paralympic athletes.

"This is a shocking and sad day for MSN as Mohammad Azlan was such a prospective athlete in the 2016 Road to Rio programme," said Ahmad Shapawi.

Mohammad Azlan remains was laid to rest at his hometown in Kampung Batu 3, Jalan Air Putih, Kemaman, Terengganu tonight. Besides clinching three gold medals at the Asian Para Games, Mohammad Azlan also won two gold medals in the 100m and 200m in the T36 category at the 2014 Asean Para Games at Naypyitaw, Myanmar. – Bernama
