Kuala Lumpur: Telekom Malaysia Bhd ™ posted a higher pre-tax profit of RM1.10 billion for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2014 compared with RM1.04 billion in 2013 amid challenging environment. Revenue jumped by 5.7 per cent to RM11.23 billion from RM10.62 billion due to higher contribution from Internet and multimedia, data and other telecommunication related services, but partially offset by lower contribution from voice and non-telecommunication related services.

Group Chief Executive Officer Tan Sri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa said 2014 was a mixed year for TM, both exciting and challenging.

"Despite the increasingly competitive operational environment, we delivered stable revenues," he said.

For the fourth quarter, TM saw its pre-tax profit slipped to RM253.68 million from RM309.68 million in the quarter previously.

Revenue, however, increased to RM3.15 billion from RM2.97 billion previously.

Last year, TM broadband customer base grew to 2.2 million users, maintaining its spot as Malaysia's broadband champion, he said in a statement here, Thursday.

He said TM's customers have chosen to upgrade their packages to speeds of 4Mbps and above, which resulted in 48 per cent or more than 1.1 million of its customers were now high-speed broadband users.

"UniFi continues to see a healthy growth of 14.8 per cent, with more than 750,000 customers to date, representing a take-up rate of about 45 per cent. Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) was also higher due to successful upselling activities and increased content buys," he said.

As for the outlook, he said the Malaysian telecommunications industry is expected to be challenging but remaining generally stable.

"It is anticipated that increased competition may put pressure on profit margins while revenue growth will be limited as fast growing data services will continue to offset declining traditional voice revenues," he said.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, the Board of Directors expects 2015 to be a positive year for the group, he said. – Bernama
