Kota Kinabalu: About 50 Youth members of the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) and non-governmental organisations on Wednesday submitted a letter to the Malaysian Fisheries Development Board (LKIM) Sabah calling for the director's post to be given to a Sabahan. Kota Kinabalu SAPP Youth Chief Dexter Chin and SAPP Youth Chief Jamain Sarudin handed over the letter to a LKIM representative as supporters carried the State flag and posters while singing the State anthem in front of the LKIM office at Alamesra at about 11.30am.

Also present were Kota Kinabalu SAPP Vice Youth Chief Stephen Gaimin and SAPP Supreme Councillor John Stephen Dionysius.

The group was directed by a police team to disperse about five minutes later.

Chin said LKIM should comply with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and let Sabahans hold the top posts in Sabah in any Federal or State government departments and agencies.

He said SAPP Youth agreed with the Papar Fishermen Association, which was supported by Deputy Works Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin that the post be given to a Sabahan instead of someone from the peninsula.

"Sabahans should be given the chance to prove that they are as qualified, experienced and able as any candidate from the peninsula," he said.

"We are not here to question the professional calibre of any civil servant but we want priority to be given to Sabahans, because it is only fitting for a Sabahan to govern government departments or agencies in Sabah," he added.

This was supported by Jamain who said SAPP Youth wants Sabahans to have the authority to make decisions because only Sabahans understand the socio culture and way of life of Sabahans.

"It is learnt that the new director is from the peninsula but we want the appointment to be returned to Sabahans not because we are anti those from the peninsula but because we want the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and the 20-Points to be fulfilled," he said.

"It is not even a month since a forum on the formation of Malaysia was organised by Universiti Malaysia Sabah and moderated by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman.

"The forum was supposed to create awareness so that Sabah is not left out but not even a month has passed since the forum and we already see this issue happening. If we do not stand up for our rights now, perhaps more posts will be taken over by those from the peninsula," he said.
