State Table Tennis C'ship 1st Leg on May 2

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah State Table Tennis Championship 2015, organised by Kota Kinabalu Table Tennis Association (KKTTA) with the cooperation of Sabah Table Tennis Association (STTA) Technical Committee, will start its first leg on May 2 to 3 at Borneo Sports Arena (BSA) in Kolombong.The championship was organised to promote the sport of table tennis and raising the standard of play as well as to select State representatives in various categories.

According to KKTTA President, Edward Chua, the expected number of participants for the championship was 400 – 500 participants from 16 categories, including top players such as Chan Chee Yang, Alan Au and Chiu Soo Jiin.

There are 10 legs in the championship where after Kota Kinabalu, next is Papar, Keningau, Tenom, Tuaran, Kudat, Sandakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu and lastly Penampang.

The annual event was also a yardstick in selecting players to represent the State into the National Championship later in November.

He said that for this year, there were four new categories opened by the organiser which are the Perpaduan Men & Women Singles and Veteran Men & Women Singles.

"The Perpaduan category was planned to encourage more Bumiputra players to participate in the championship while the Veteran category was mainly to promote table tennis as safe and healthy sport for the elderly," Edward said when met at Damai on Monday.

The championship also will see a new type of ball approved by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) being used.

"The new ball was introduced by the Federation to give slower players the chance to control the game as the new ball was expected to create less spin and less bounce.

In other news, KKTTA will be organising their own Kota Kinabalu Commercial Table Tennis Championship later in August where top players from the country, China, Hong Kong, Thailand and Indonesia will battle it out to win prizes of RM6,000.

They also will be sending four teams to compete in the Asia Pasific Veteran Championship in Vietnam later this December.
