Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Karate Association (SKA) contingent captured nine gold and three bronze medals at the Manuel Veguillas International Karate championships held at Music Hall of SM Mall of Asia, Seaside Blvd, Pasay City, Philippines from June 25-26.

The gold medal winners were Alvince Zurizal (Cadet Male Individual Kata and Kumite -63kg), Michell Michelin Linus (Senior Female Kumite -55kg), Leong Jia Chii (Senior Female -61kg), Pressy Misty Philip (Senior Female +61kg), Josvin Jase (Senior Male Individual Kata), Stanley Dulian (Senior Kumite -55kg), Richal Mattan (Senior Kumite -60kg) and the Male Team Kata while the bronze medals were contributed by Vellcarollyne Agustine (Senior Female Individual Kata), Iqmal Jafar (Senior Male Kumite -67kg) and Muhd Aiman Azlan (Senior Male Kumite +75kg).

SKA secretary general Julian Chin, who did not set a gold medal target for the 14-member team comprising their Sukma Games bound athletes, was delighted with the results.

“The result was unexpected and we are very happy for them. However, they must continue to stay focused because the  preparation for Sukma is still ongoing.

“There is still a lot of work that needs to be done as coach Danny (Fredoline) has informed me that they need to improve their technical skills and we will try our best to rectify all the weaknesses before the games starts in September,” he said on Monday.
