Kota Kinabalu: DAP Sabah Chairman Jimmy Wong has challenged his former deputy, Fred Fung, to lodge a police report pertaining to the election funds issue. Failing which, Fung should withdraw his statement and apologise to him publicly within one week.

The MP for Kota Kinabalu refused to comment further on the issue over the newspaper, saying that the press was not the right avenue to discuss the issue.

"Answering in court is far more fruitful than wasting time arguing in public. Nothing more I need to quarrel with Fred over the issues of elections funds in front of public." Wong said he would consider taking legal action against Fung if he fails to do the necessary. "He has made a serious allegation against me. It's character assassination. But I still give him a chance to apologise. Within one week, if you still refuse to apologise, see you in court," he said.

Meanwhile, Fred claimed the RM100,000 that was given to him for safekeeping during the 13th General Election was given to DAP candidates in Sabah, except Tawau, as election expenditures.

"The handing over of the expenditures to the candidates were either witnessed by the Sabah DAP Treasurer or Jimmy Wong himself. "Luckily, I still have the records and vouchers which were properly signed by all those concerned.

"And again, on the RM5,000 donation received before the 13th General Election, which Jimmy Wong claimed I never returned to the party, he seems to have suffered from mental block again.

"A quick check with the party's account will show that I surrendered the money in full to the party," he said, adding he has the bank-in slip record as proof. Fung challenged Wong to open the cards regarding the misappropriation of election funds during the last 13th General Election.

"It is a relief to hear that the Mount Kinabalu Earthquake Relief Fund fund was well managed. But he conveniently seems to forget to explain the election fund of RM180,000  cash which I  witnessed during the handing over and not banked into DAP Sabah's account," alleged Fung.

Fung claimed to have received many calls as to what happened to their donations to the party in the last general election and whether the relief fund was fully accounted for.

"A number of DAP officials told me that the RM180,000 election donation which was witnessed by me was never banked into the party's account. And I, being part of DAP before, also wanted to know what happened to it and whether anyone misappropriated," he said.

Fung said since Wong had promised that DAP Sabah would make public the account book of the relief fund soon, the Kota Kinabalu MP would not forget to do the same for the election fund.
