KEPALA BATAS: The Civil Defence Force is considering an increase in service allowance for its volunteers in an effort to look after their welfare and attract more members. Its chief commissioner, Datuk Ogu Salim Omar, said the proposal to increase the allowance was still at the department stage and the results of the study would be submitted to the government.

"The force hopes the proposal gets the support of the ministry but I understand there are many things to be considered because it is also dependent on the 2017 budget. "At present, the service allowance for volunteers is RM6 per hour," he told reporters after officiating at a National Civil Defence Institute (Pispa) Community College 2016 gathering here Thursday.

The event, which saw letters of appointment as associate civil defence officers presented to 220 officers from 88 Community Colleges throughout the country, was also attended by the Director-General of Department of Community College Education, Datuk Amir Md Noor.

Meanwhile, Ogu Salim said the force would set up a platoon at the community level, to be known as the Civil Defence Emergency Response Team-Community (CDERT-C) to provide early assistance in case of natural disasters and emergencies.

He said volunteers at the community level would be given courses and training by the force so that they would be ready to face any emergency before follow-up action was taken by other support forces. – Bernama
