Kota Kinabalu: 37 teams are taking part in the inaugural Sabah Pairs Open Lawn Bowls Championship organised by Sabah Lawn Bowls Association which began at the Likas Lawn Bowls Stadium on Thursday until Sunday (October 30).President Ladislaus Maruda said the tournament was initiated so that more teams from other countries can compete in the future.

"Our main aim in staging this competition is to attract more teams from the region to come here and compete.

We have organised National Pairs competition in the past which was only opened to teams within the country and the addition hopefully will give more exposure to our players especially the juniors."

He said the men's winner of the four-day competition will grab the top cash prize of RM2,500, RM1,300 for the runner-up with the losing semi-finalists each receive RM800 while the losing quarter-finalists will each get RM400.

Only the top four in the women's category will receive cash prizes with the champion getting RM1,200 followed by RM750 for the runner-up and RM450 each for the semi-finalists.

Hosts Sabah have the most number of teams taking part in the competition with 13 pairs followed by Labuan with eight, three each from Brunei and Perak and two from Kuala Lumpur.
