Kota Kinabalu: Seri Mengasih Centre at Tanjung Aru will be organising its second run, the Seri Mengasih Heroes Run 2017 on April 9 to raise much needed funds for its operational cost. Run event coordinator Moses Chiuh said after the overwhelming success of the 1st Heroes Run in 2016 which saw some 2,000 participants taking part in the Run from Likas Stadium, the Centre hopes that support for this year's run would see an increase in the number of participants.

Attractive finisher medals and heroes' T shirts also await all participants, he said, adding that they hope to raise at least RM 100,000 from the run.

He said this to the media at a press conference at the Sabah Golf and Country Club on Thursday.

Moses said the Heroes Run 2017 would see a new route for its 10 KM run starting from Maktab Nasional in Taman Kingfisher up along Jalan Sulaman into Alam Mesra and back to Maktab Nasional.

"There will also be a special 3KM Family run around Taman Kingfisher specifically for families of at least one parent and one child at a special rate of RM60 per person. Special group rates are also available."

Apart from being a fund raising project, the Seri Mengasih Heroes Run is also aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle, creating greater awareness of persons with intellectual disabilities in the community and highlighting them as heroes. Runners are urged to register as soon as possible in order to secure their place in the Run.

Seri Mengasih is a non-profit organisation running a special developmental centre which provides training programmes and services for persons with learning disabilities such as intellectual disability, autistic spectrum disorder (autism) and persons with cerebral palsy.

Its prime mission is to empower every one of its students and trainees towards independent living or semi-independent living and achieving integration into the community.

He said the Centre has been in operation for the past 36 years.

"At the moment, the Centre has close to 100 students. The cost of running the centre and maintaining up to date standards of training and programmes is a minimum of RM700 per student/trainee per month because of the intensive and specialised nature of the training programmes with low student-teacher ratio.

"Parents' contribution covers up to 30 per cent of the cost while the rest is obtained through donations from the public and fund raising projects with the Run being one such fund raising project."

The event is being organised together with Valiant Events and fully supported by Sabah Sports Commissioners Office and the Sabah Athletics Association (SAA).
