Assaulting mother with a machete: Man pleads guilty

Kota Kinabalu: A 37-year-old unemployed man pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court to assaulting his 74-year-old mother with a machete in Penampang last year.However, Azmi @ Andrew Ghani will know his fate on June 15 as the court needs to go through his documents, after he claimed that he was a patient at the Hospital Mesra Bukit Padang and also intellectually disabled.Azmi admitted to causing hurt to one Ungut Loijin at 12.30pm on Nov 1, 2016 in a house at Kg Tuunoh.

Prosecuting officer, Inspector Rasydan Jasni told Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun that the woman had just returned from her older sister's house when Azmi dragged her inside the house and scolded her.Azmi hit his mother with an umbrella and belt repeatedly and gagged her mouth with a towel when she tried to scream and even wrapped her neck with a towel.Azmi then took a machete and wanted to hit her head but she shielded it with her left hand causing her to sustain injury.She received treatment at the hospital for bruises on her left eye and all over her body as well as a cut on her left hand.

Rasydan also informed the court that Azmi was fit to enter a plea as stated in the report from Hospital Mesra.Azmi faces a jail term of up to 10 years or fine or whipping or any two of such punishment.
