Kiulu Adventure Challenge on December 3

Kota Kinabalu: The 3rd Kiulu Adventure Challenge (KAC) is set to take place at the Rumah Tradisi Kiulu on December 3, starting at 6.30am.The event organised by the Kiulu Tourism Association (KTA) and supported by the Sabah Tourism Board (STB) and Tourism Malaysia have added a 5 km fun run apart from leisure rafting (15km), running(12km), cycling (30km) and team events.

Running and cycling are individual events open to men, women and veterans age 45 and above while the four-member team challenge category must feature one woman or veteran man age 45 and above in the line-up.

The course is designed to be moderately challenged to target amateur runners/cyclists and family oriented water rafting activities from enthusiasts from all over Sabah as well as Sarawak, Labuan and the Peninsula.

STB Chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai who initiated the race back in 2015 said at a press conference on Thursday that the event is an effort by the government to promote Kiulu as a recreation and adventure destination.

"With the support from the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia and Sabah Tourism Board, KAC is one of the many efforts carried out by the state government to promote rural tourism and empower the local economy by creating tourism and business opportunities in Sabah.

"And since it started in 2015, the event has definitely helped to promote rural and eco-tourism activities in Kiulu, he said.

The uniqueness of the challenge according to Joniston, are their objectives to establish cooperation and closer relation with the village community and the tourism sector, to enhance the promotion of cross country trekking, cycling, water rafting, homestay and other related tourism activities, and to support and raise awareness on the importance of conserving the river and fish stocks for the benefits of the community and its tourism activities as well as to make it a model of a successful rural tourism operation in Malaysia and showcasing Sabah in general and Kiulu in particular as the nature adventure destination.

Meanwhile, 430 have confirmed their participation to date and the closing date for registration has been extended to November 25.
