LABUAN: Local police have expanded the community policing programme to primary schools. In this regard, 284 pupils and 20 teachers of SJK Chi Wen and SK Pekan 1 had the opportunity to interact with policemen at a one-day event on Thursday.

Labuan Police Chief Supt Adzhar Othman (pic) said the outreach programme was aimed at establishing closer rapport with students and is part of the police's crime prevention exercise.

"With school holidays having started, we are expanding the programme to primary schools, as we believe crime prevention can start from an early age.

"The programme has been carried out in almost all the secondary schools on the island and we are now focusing on primary schools," he said here, Friday.

According to him, the programme was designed towards establishing a safer community through close cooperation and understanding between residents and police.

"Our intention is to form smart partnerships with the community to identify and prioritise problems of crime and social disorder," he said.

Adzhar said the effort required police to make a conscious effort to create an atmosphere in which community partners actively and willingly cooperate with them .

"The community policing programme is one way of building the bridge to reach and be accessible to the community," he said.
