Kota Kinabalu: Government agencies need to enhance cooperation with other sectors to tackle welfare issues through the implementation of the National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS)."The efficiency of all parties handling the recent floods in Terengganu through NBOS have proven its success and was given the 'Gold Standard' recognition by our Prime Minister," said Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid during the Welfare Department's Excellence Award held at the Pan Pacific Sutera Hotel here.

She stated that it was not easy for one to achieve excellence, especially in the yearly evaluations, as recipients must acquire high levels of commitment, dedications and sacrifices.

"For those who are in the Welfare Department, part of their sacrifices would be leaving their family members behind, especially during floods. They are required to be on duty for 24 hours at relocation centres to ensure the comfort of all victims.

"I hope that all of you will be dedicated and sincere in doing your work. I also hope you all will be caring and responsible and take all the clients' problems seriously with a sense of urgency in handling welfare issues," she said.

Jainab also explained that the awards are given not only to recognise staff who have shown excellent performance but also to support excellent working culture in management and services aspects.

There were 18 excellence award recipients, two retirees and three Sabah Council of Social Services' award recipients.

The event also saw the retirement of Welfare Department Director Ithong @ Etong Terang who had been in service for 38 years.

"I would like to thank Etong as well as the other retiree for their contributions and sacrifices throughout their services" she said.

Etong started his service on Sept 1, 1977 as an Assistant Community Welfare at Kota Kinabalu Welfare Department.

He later received various appointments throughout his services and soon became the Welfare Department Director on May 10, 2008.

Etong advised those still in service to continue their efforts and cooperations with one another in facing any challenges.

"We may not be able to satisfy everyone but we can ensure that we do our best in everything," he said.
