Kota Kinabalu: A non-governmental organisation, Eco World Foundation, donated 60 sets of students' desks and chairs and four units of LCD projectors worth a total of RM20,440 to SJK (c) Chung Hwa here in its latest efforts to assist the needy. It was quick response to a call by the school here to help with the replacement of the desks and chairs which had worn out over the years as well as appeal for the provision of the LCD projectors.

Its Chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, who handed out the donation, Tuesday said the new desks and chairs were delivered to the school in April, this year, after receiving their application for assistance in January this year.

He said the foundation also adhered to stringent quality checks to ensure durability of the desks and chairs.

"The foundation believed strongly in education as an investment for the country's future as a good education has the power to change someone's life for the better.

"This is the main reason why we are focused on providing education assistance to schools in need," Lee said.

He said the Foundation main programme is the Eco World Students Aid Programme (SAP) which provides financial assistance to underprivileged primary and secondary students of all races with the objective of keeping them in school.

"Since the inception of the foundation, it has donated over 3,000 sets of desks and chairs to other schools and has spent close to RM430,000 to replace school furniture and improve facilities.

"Currently, the foundation is helping 3,000 primary and secondary school students from Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Pahang, Johor and Sabah," Lee said.

With a budget of RM5 million per year, he said SAP adopts a holistic approach in addressing every aspect of a needy primary student's educational requirements.

This, he said includes equipping the students for the new school year, providing for his/her meals in schools, and paying the school and tuition fees.

Apart from these activities, Lee said the foundation also seeks to help the underprivileged Malaysians through counselling, home visits and career guidance.
