Alor Setar: The International Aid for the Protection & Welfare of Animals (IAPWA) which began managing the city dog pound since July last year has neutered over 1,500 stray dogs and provided additional veterinary care and adoptions to hundreds of dogs and cats. The team, led by Project Director, Sharilyn Marcus, have had a successful first year, including winning "Charity of the Year" at the Ceva UK Animal Welfare Awards in Birmingham. They have now expanded their facilities at the DBKK Dog Pound and have further growth plans in 2016 to neuter over 3,000 dogs every year, which will see a significant decrease in the number of puppies born on the streets.

It is the largest and first such programme to trap, neuter and release (TNR) and thus reduce the city's stray dog population.

"It is estimated that there are approximately 10,000 stray dogs in Kota Kinabalu and for a TNR programme to be successful its essential that it is run on a large scale to make a measurable impact on the population," said Sharilyn.

The team comprises five Animal Welfare Assistants responsible for catching, rescue and release activities along with caring for the patients at the Pound, 5 within the Veterinary Team comprised largely of international veterinary volunteers Sharilyn oversees the project and it's development.

"We are extremely grateful for the support we have received from the Mayor, DBKK and the Veterinary Department and also like to thank our supporters in Kota Kinabalu and overseas who have helped us to treat and care for so many animals.

"We are now looking forward to expanding our services further to provide even more care to the street animals of Kota Kinabalu and elsewhere in Sabah."

IAPWA also met with TYT Tun Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Juhar Haji Mahiruddin with Faridah Malai and SPCA groups in Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Tawau and Lahad Datu last month to discuss animal rights and potential changes to legislation across Sabah where the NGO's hope to see significant changes for animal welfare.
