RIO DE JANEIRO: Malaysia's first woman sailor in the Olympic Games, Nur Shazrin Mohd Latif promises not to waste the opportunity to prove her worth in the Rio Games despite her 'premature' Olympics debut. The 18-year-old Johor-born teenager admits being shocked to know she qualified for Rio as she was aiming to make her debut in the Tokyo Games in 2020.

"Since I am already here, I don't want to take the place for granted but in fact wanted to hone my skill and gain experience from world best sailors in the Laser Radial," she said here today, ahead of her race on Monday.

She picked up the Olympic ticket after winning the silver medal in the Asian Sailing Championship in Abu Dhabi last March.

Being the youngest sailor in her event, Nur Shazrin and seasoned men's sailor Khairulnizaam Mohd Afendy have been familiarising themselves for the past two weeks, with the wind condition and race venue.

Her coach, Norhisham Mat Noor believes Nur Shazrin has the capability to create surprises in her maiden appearance on the world stage.

From my observation on other competitors during training, I find that there is no big gap between Nur Shazrin and others.

"She must be clever to read the wind condition and the tide on race day to enable them to bring out the best in her," he said. He said sailors often found the unpredictable wind condition and daily tide, a constraint.

"These factors give an equal chance for all and a level playing field to compete for medals.

"The chances are there but she needs to give the best," he said. – Bernama
