style="text-transform: uppercase;">Kota Marudu: PKR Kota Marudu Chief, Anthony Mandiau received yet another complain about illegal sand dredging in the area. Land owner Chong Hock Vun who lives near the Bandau River adjacent to the junction to Giat Mara Training Centre is unhappy with the situation where sand has been pumped out of the river, causing it to collapse which in turn affects his land too.

He claimed that the sand-dredging operator has no valid EIA and is operating without a licence.

He requested Anthony to seek attention from the authorities, especially from the Department of Environment (DOE) and Land Office.

The dredging work must be stopped due to its negative effects on the land and riverbanks, said Chong.

In another case relating to illegal sand dredging in Kg. Rakit, Anthony was informed that sand dredging activities are still going on despite reports being made.

He will approach the MACC to file in the cases for a thorough investigation to see whether there is any corruption involved.

Anthony said illegal river sand dredging is a serious offence punishable under the law and the DOE must take stern action to catch these people.

He urged State Tourism and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun to immediately instruct his officers to investigate the matter and avoid any cover up.
