PENAMPANG: Anthropologist Dr Paul Porodong said “Momogun” is neither a language nor an ethnicity but a broad term that encompasses the diverse indigenous groups of Sabah.
“It is similar to how the term Formosan is used to describe indigenous peoples in Taiwan and Tangata Whenua for New Zealand’s Maori people.
“Many people misunderstand or misinterpret the term Momogun. It is important to understand that this term is not meant to replace or diminish individual ethnic identities. Rather, it serves as a collective identifier for indigenous status,” he said.
Paul, who is also a member of the State Heritage Council at Penampang Cultural Centre, said this at the Momogun Premier Convention on the proposed adoption of Momogun as a unifying term for all indigenous groups in Sabah.
