Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, 78, was admitted to the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday due to fatigue, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed.
The Sultan is in Malaysia for the ASEAN-GCC and ASEAN-China summits.
A government source said he was hospitalised between the meetings, adding the National Heart Institute is the designated VIP medical facility for the events.
Sultan Hassanal, the world’s longest-reigning monarch, has led Brunei since 1967.
His rule brought independence from Britain and high living standards, but also drew criticism over the implementation of harsh Islamic laws.
