Kota Kinabalu: Kian Kok Middle School proved its students can excel in both studies and  music with a performance by its string orchestra at their annual concert “From Screen to Stage” on Saturday.

Board Chairman Datuk Clement Yeh said the school focuses on developing students in all areas not just book learning, but also building good character, staying healthy, learning social skills, appreciating beauty and understanding the value of hard work.

“School is not just about textbooks and tests. Good education helps students become smart and kind-hearted people,” Clement said at the concert held in the school hall.

The evening’s performance was a perfect example of this approach, with students playing beautiful music from popular movies.

Guest of honour Wong Chow Hin was impressed over how the students managed to practice music regularly while still doing well in class.

“These young people are sharing their dreams through music, touching people’s hearts with their melodies, and showing how hard work pays off,” Wong said.

The crowd especially loved it when music teacher Yap Ling and his wife Grace Lee performed a local song called Song of Mount Wuzhi.

Clement thanked the hardworking teachers and supportive parents who help make it possible for students to pursue their interests while studying.

The school said the concert was more than just entertainment, it was a valuable lesson that taught students how to tell stories and connect with people through music.
