20 sen for each plastic bag

Kota Kinabalu: Customers in the city will have to pay 20 sen for each plastic bag when shopping, in line with the Government's direction towards zero plastic use in the State and country.City Hall said in a statement that it will reactivate the "No Plastic Bag" campaign to reduce the use of plastic bags which are harmful to the environment while at the same time raise public awareness on the importance of environmental conservation.

It is also a show of support to the implementation of the "Green City" masterplan 2019-2023 as well as in line with the direction of the Government as underlined in the "Malaysia Roadmap Towards Zero Plastics 2018-2030."

City Hall said a set of campaign guidelines has been provided for the purpose of compliance and effective implementation.

It said the total amount collected will be credited into EAC KK's account which would be used to fund its environmental conservation and awareness programmes.

City Hall said as of now among premises which have agreed to participate in the campaign are CKS Supermarket, Lintas Superstore, Orange, Giant, 99 Speed Mart, KFC, G-Mart, 7eleven, Servay Hypermarket, Bataras, Merdeka Supermarket, Guardian, Sunny Supermarket, Recipe House, Milimewa and Parkson.

The campaign will be launched today (Saturday) along with the Cleanliness with Families campaign and City Friend.

To make way for the launching ceremony, City Hall announced that Jalan Bandaran which is situated next to its building will be closed from 7am to 2pm on Saturday.

Road users are advised to follow the instructions from enforcement officers on duty.
