Kota Kinabalu: SBC Corporation Berhad on Thursday officially launched “The Quayside,” the waterfront portion of the Jesselton Quay Masterplan, marking a major step in transforming Kota Kinabalu’s coastline into a vibrant tourism, leisure and cultural hub.

The Quayside, a 400-metre-long privately owned public realm, offers an innovative space that blends alfresco dining, leisure food and beverage options, and scenic views of the waterfront.

Its CEO Datuk Sia Teong Heng said this step forward is the first phase of the broader Jesselton Quay development, with SBC Corporation planning for the entire masterplan to be completed by 2028.

The final waterside tower, Q Suites, will coincide with the completion of The Quayside, creating a fully integrated destination.

“The Quayside represents a new chapter for Kota Kinabalu’s waterfront, where new experiences meet old charm.

“By drawing inspiration from the vibrant atmosphere of Gaya Street and the urban energy of Xintiandi in Shanghai, we’re creating a space that reflects both our rich heritage and modern aspirations,” he told a press conference at Jesselton Quay.

Strategically located adjacent to the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) and the international cruise terminal, The Quayside will benefit from high foot traffic, attracting visitors from these two key locations.

SBC Corporation envisions a bustling hotspot where people converge to enjoy not only the waterfront views but also the interactive experiences designed to showcase the best of local culture and heritage.

The Quayside will feature Q Shoppes — a retail space offering curated products — and Q Square, a vibrant public plaza.

The Q Marche, an upscale market area, will offer premium goods and services in a unique bazaar-style setting. Regular music and art festivals, along with weekend flea markets, will provide entertainment and reinforce The Quayside’s status as a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists.

Sia said this initiative is not just about creating a physical space but about fostering community engagement and preserving Sabah’s cultural identity.

“The Quayside will offer a platform for showcasing Sabah’s heritage, with local artisans and performers given the opportunity to share their work with a wider audience,” he said.

With the completion of the first phase of the Jesselton Quay Masterplan, SBC Corporation is confident that by 2028, the entire development will transform Kota Kinabalu into one of the region’s top cities for culture, food and leisure.

The official launch of The Quayside marks a new era for the city’s waterfront, positioning it as a key destination for residents, tourists and business owners alike, ensuring a vibrant and sustainable future for Kota Kinabalu’s coastal region.
