Kota Kinabalu: A total of 11 representatives from SM All Saints once again brought international recognition to the school after achieving outstanding success at the Borneo International Innovation Creativity Competition (BIICC).

Organised by the Malaysia Youth Scientist Organisation (MYSO) in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), the competition took place on June 20 and attracted 172 teams from various countries, including Bangladesh, Indonesia, Mexico and others.

Representing SM All Saints were eight students and three supervising teachers, competing across three teams. Together, they secured three Gold Medals, while one team also earned two prestigious Special Awards: the Best Environmental Award and the Best Poster Award.

The Echodetect team, comprising Bradley Wayne Welden, Eyrell Jaenry (team leader) and Caleb Jeremy Yen, under the guidance of Ad’smor Sahirin, developed the Termite Detector, an innovative device designed to detect early termite activity through vibration sensing.

This technology helps prevent severe structural damage to buildings.

Competing in the Smart Community & Rural Innovation category, the team aligned their innovation with three United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Their project impressed the international panel of judges and earned both the Best Environmental Award and the Best Poster Award.

The second team, Sortex, represented by Diananee Nathasya Isve Ismail Bian, Aleeya Husna Suhaili, and Schainie Nichole Stanly (team leader), and supervised by Chong Woon Cheng, won a Gold Medal for developing the Sortex Smart Bin—an innovative waste segregation system that automatically sorts waste into designated categories to promote sustainable waste management.

The third team, The Luminaries, led by supervising teacher Disimon Edmund Gansoi and represented by Clarissa Ruth Manji and Olivia Lee Ya Chen, also received a Gold Medal for their innovation, LOOKCAR v2.

The device is designed to prevent infants and young children from being accidentally left inside parked vehicles by sending emergency alerts to parents or guardians, thereby enhancing child safety.

SM All Saints Principal, Dr. Mary Gambidau, said that STEM education and innovation have become an integral part of the school’s culture.

She expressed pride in the achievements of both the students and their supervising teachers, particularly the school’s STEM Warriors.

She also hopes that even more students will participate and excel in international innovation competitions in the years ahead.
