A FEW months ago, news went viral regarding the demolition and burning of the Palauh community’s houses, which were illegally constructed within the protected areas of Sabah Parks, specifically in the Tun Sakaran Marine Park (TMTS) in Semporna, Sabah.
This issue sparked intense debate among the public, with some supporting the demolition and others condemning the action.
The matter was later clarified by the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Environment (KePKAS), Datuk Seri Christina Liew, who stated that the burning of the illegal settlements of the Palauh community within the Sabah Parks’ area was not carried out by enforcement officers, but rather by irresponsible individuals aiming to aggravate the situation.
Nevertheless, the conflict between the Palauh community and Sabah Parks remains a significant and complex issue, as it not only invites criticism from within the state and country but also has the potential to attract international attention.
