RANAU: A 30-year-old woman was fined RM5,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here after pleading guilty to a charge of driving without due care and attention, causing a three-vehicle collision along Jalan Ranau-Telupid.
The court ordered Lizie Lim Hui Yen to serve eight months’ imprisonment in default of payment.
She admitted committing the offence under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a fine of between RM5,000 and RM10,000, imprisonment of up to 12 months, or both, upon conviction.
According to the charge, the offence occurred between 11.30am and 8.48pm on May 7, 2026, at Kilometre 25, Jalan Ranau-Telupid, where the accused drove a Proton Saga without exercising the care and attention expected of a prudent driver, thereby endangering other road users.
The facts presented in court revealed that the accused was travelling from Kampung Bitoon towards Ranau when she attempted to overtake another vehicle at a section of the road marked with double lines.
Investigations found that the accused failed to ensure the opposite lane was clear before overtaking, resulting in her vehicle colliding with a Toyota Hilux travelling from Ranau in the opposite direction.
The impact caused the Toyota Hilux to lose control before crashing into an oncoming Nissan trailer lorry, resulting in a three-vehicle collision.
Police investigations, led by Sergeant Zairi Dahlan, included an examination of the accident scene and the preparation of sketches and other relevant evidence.
The investigation concluded that the collision was caused by the accused’s failure to exercise proper care while overtaking, leading to the charge under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
After considering the accused’s guilty plea and the facts of the case, the court imposed a RM5,000 fine, with eight months’ imprisonment in default of payment.
The case underscores the dangers of overtaking in prohibited areas, particularly on roads marked with double lines, where a single misjudgment can result in serious multi-vehicle collisions and endanger the lives of other motorists.
