MOSCOW: Sixteen people, including four children, were left stranded about 60 metres above the Volga River after a cable car broke down in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod.
The gondolas remained suspended for more than an hour after a malfunction caused several cabins to bunch together mid-air, according to local authorities.
According to
East2West, emergency personnel rescued all the passengers by lowering them to the ground using ropes, and no injuries were reported.
Authorities said the incident was believed to have been caused by severe weather, including heavy rain and strong winds, and an investigation has been launched.
The cable car, which links Nizhny Novgorod with the nearby town of Bor, has operated since 2012 and serves as both a tourist attraction and a commuter transport link.
