Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s indigenous Ka’amatan (Harvest Festival) was celebrated for the first time in Ålesund, Norway, recently by Sabahans and fellow Malaysians living there.
Norway is known as Land of the Midnight sun because its location above the Arctic Circle means the sun is visible for 24 hours during summer due to the earth’s tilt.
Organiser Christina Langgayang said attendance was modest at fewer than 100 people. Ålesund, a scenic port town on Norway’s west coast, is surrounded by majestic mountains, adding a touch of Kinabalu to the celebration.
Activities included tug-of-war, puzzle challenges around the lake, darts, sack races, skiing and the Unduk Ngadau and Randawi Tavantang pageants, which sought the most elegant and macho contestants, respectively.
