Kota Kinabalu: Sabah is focused on the creation of marine protected areas and the expansion of the Tagal system to address challenges facing her ocean’s health.
“Among challenges facing Sabah’s ocean health is climate change resulting in rising sea temperatures and levels, as well as pollution, particularly plastic and microplastic contamination,” Local Government and Housing Permanent Secretary Datuk Dr Jamili Nais told a forum on Blue Economy: Social Inclusion and Community Empowerment here, Sunday.
He said overfishing, including destructive practices like fish bombing and cyanide fishing, is also among the challenges faced.
“To address these issues, Sabah is focusing on the creation of marine protected areas and the expansion of the traditional Tagal system.
