Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Legislative Assembly on Thursday passed the Parks (Amendment) Enactment 2024 to strengthen environmental protection and modernise park management to align with sustainable development goals while balancing conservation and economic growth.
Part of the amendments allows parks officials to carry firearms while on duty.
This gives the Parks Enactment its first major amendment since 2007 with the Bill tabled by Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew on Thursday addressing major shortcomings in environmental protection and management.
“This amendment is not just about legislative updates, it is about creating a robust, forward- thinking framework that can effectively protect Sabah’s rich biodiversity while supporting sustainable development,” she said.
She said the Bill underwent an inclusive process involving numerous stakeholders before being finalised.
“This collaborative approach ensures that the amendment incorporates diverse perspectives and addresses the many different challenges of environmental conservation,” she said.
