Kota Kinabalu: Fire broke out at a three-storey warehouse in Kolombong, Thursday, used by Fook Yuen Cafe and Catering to bake cakes and pastries for its outlets, causing an estimated RM3 million in losses. No injuries were reported.
According to a staff member, the electrical system at the premises had been prone to short circuits and they rushed out as soon as thick smoke, believed to be coming from the ovens, filled the area, making the fire itself impossible to see.
“The electricity supply always had problems with short circuits,” she said.
“The smoke was so thick coming from the ovens that we could not even see the fire, so we immediately rushed out,” she added.
Store supervisor Yong, in her 30s, said the warehouse, which has been operating for 12 years and supplies baked goods to the company’s four to five Fook Yuen Cafe branches, employs 21 staff.
The lower ground floor houses the baking operations, while the upper floors serve as offices.
All staff managed to evacuate safely when the fire broke out at 11.17am.
Firefighters were at the scene attending to the blaze at the time of reporting.
