Initial investigations found the victim, a 34-year-old foreigner, had left with the suspect that morning to drink alcohol in the Penampang area before they returned to their shared lodging around 11pm.

Investigations found a quarrel broke out between the victim and the suspect over a misunderstanding while both were intoxicated.

The victim allegedly struck the suspect with a wood, prompting the suspect to retaliate by stabbing him four times with a vegetable knife.

The suspect is believed to have fled the scene after the incident. The victim’s body was later found inside a manhole near the location. The body has been sent for post mortem.
