THE Government is continuing to strengthen the development of marine and brackish water aquaculture industry in Libaran, Sandakan through various programmes under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to boost fishermen’s incomes and enhance the country’s food security.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said his ministry, through the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM), is implementing the Fishermen’s Association Aquaculture Project Initiative Programme for the 2026-2030 period, as well as the Fishermen’s Association Aquaculture Project Enhancement Initiative.
He said the programmes comprise four main components - the construction or upgrading of project infrastructure, the provision of aquaculture equipment and facilities, the implementation of a one-cycle pilot farming project, and training and capacity-building courses for participants.
Mohamad said the implementation of the programmes would enable fishermen’s associations to become contributors to local aquaculture production while increasing the associations’ revenue and benefiting their members, who comprise local fishermen.
In addition, he said the Sabah Fisheries Department (DOF Sabah) is implementing the Aquaculture Capacity Strengthening Programme and the Food Security Through Marine Aquaculture Production Programme under the 13MP.
