SANDAKAN: A three-day integrated operation at several squatter settlements in Sandakan uncovered an electricity theft and illegal distribution syndicate involving unauthorised power connections.
The operation, led by the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS), involved 80 enforcement personnel from ECoS, Sabah Electricity (SE), the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Immigration Department and the Sabah Water Department.
ECoS chief executive officer Datuk Ir Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid said four foreign nationals were identified and detained to assist investigations into the syndicate, which is believed to have illegally supplied electricity to homes in squatter areas.
He said preliminary investigations showed the syndicate charged between RM40 and RM100 per household for electricity supplied through illegal connections.
“The four individuals are being investigated under Sections 8(1)(b), 61(1), 61(3)(a) and 61(8) of the Electricity Supply Enactment 2024,” he said.
He said offences under Sections 8(1)(b) and 61(3)(a), if convicted, carry a fine of up to RM1 million, imprisonment of up to 10 years, or both.
Abdul Nasser said 35 additional cases were also being investigated under Section 61(3)(a) of the same enactment, involving 26 foreign nationals and nine Malaysians.
The cases are expected to be brought to court upon completion of investigations.
He said such operations would be intensified to curb electricity theft, which not only breaches the law but also poses serious safety risks, including electric shocks and fires.
Sabah Electricity is also implementing the meter house approach to reduce illegal connections and ensure safer and more orderly electricity supply to consumers.
ECoS said it remained committed to strengthening enforcement through strategic cooperation with relevant agencies to combat electricity theft in Sabah.
